Taser used on 10-year-old girl who didn't want to take a shower
Categories: Latest news, Video
An officer used a Taser gun on a 10-year-old girl after she refused to take a shower. The police had been called in after her mother had complained that she was behaving in an unruly manner and refusing to take a shower. She then proceeded to give the officer permission to taser the girl.
Reported in the Telegraph, it's alleged that the officer arrived to discover the girl curled up on the floor, screaming. He wrote that "Her mother told me to take her if I needed to".
The girl was "violently kicking and verbally combative" when he tried to take her into custody.
He then used the stun gun on her back for a brief moment.
The girl's father has admitted that the little girl was experiencing emotional problems, but felt that "treating her like an animal" was a step too far.
He suggested that the officer wasn't capable of his job if he was unable to pick the girl up, handcuff her and put her in the car.
The local Mayor, Vernon McDaniel, has also stepped in and suggested that the FBI need to investigate. He went on to say that an investigation will determine whether or not it was a mistake to taser the girl. The local police Chief has stated that no disciplinary action will be taken against the officer.
He defended the officers actions by suggesting that handcuffing a child could lead to broken arms or legs, but a taser is simply used to bring the child under control.
The girl will now face disorderly conduct charges as a juvenile. There's something very odd about a situation where a 10-year-old faces charges, and the officer with a weapon doesn't face any consequences.
Do you think police would ever be justified in using a Taser on a child?

its a great pity that our own police force in dealing, with some of the street problems you see on the tv programmes dont use this system more often .the abuse they have to suffer is a disgrace

Well im all for control of criminal factions and the use of reasonable force where required, but on a ten year old girl?? obviously R.Salt one has to wonder if the current problems with young people in britain, can be attributed to people like yourself making it obvious that you think violence like this to minors is acceptable,i suggest you look carefully at your own attitudes before advocating this behaviour by our police officers towards children.

what a rediculous comment! using a taser on a ten year old child should be seen as a crime and the pfiicer should be sacked at the least, who in there right mind would say that this is ok? did this child threaten anyones life? any officer who cannot restrain a child without hurting then should not be in the job and at best given a mop job with a rubber handle incase he feels to hit a child! outragous and I have had enough of people in trusted positions behaving like the sick criminals they should be arresting other than behaving like them and getting paid for it! if he had done that to my child then i can honestly say it would have been his last act.

I live in the UK and am deeply shocked and distressed by this story, it is apalling that such violence could legally be used on a 10 year old, child just because she did not want to shower!!! What is that to do with the police???
No wonder the USA seems such a violent place to us, I just hope we do not copy you, and our police are never regularly armed and violent, against young children.

At what point does a parent need to bring in the police because their child wont take a shower. This is thanks to living in a society that frowns on parents chastising their own children. Power has been taken from parents and teachers in their need to control unruley children. That being said there is no need to use a taser on a 10 year old for refusing to take a shower. As the story states the girl had emotional issues at the time and maybe these should have been addressed. I think the copper should return and taser the mother for not being in control of her own child

I have to agree with you, but its due to the previous government in the 70s. Everyone was encouraged to covet everything their friends, relatives and neighbours had. Then you had the do-gooders coming in with cannot smack unruly kids, and now you cannot make your kids do anything they dont want to, eg. showers, going to school, not smoking/drinking etc. About time that things were reversed back to the fifties before the conservatives/thatcher got into power....
Also I dont think that most people have read this properly as it is in the USA, so childline, NSPCC, etc are NOT in the USA. and if it was in the UK then the FBI would not be involved......

good on you i agree that the police here have to put up with yobs and the like, its about time this country put some pride back in it ,and made great britain great again, treat the yobs how they treat other people, and stop being to soft with them.bramble

This is a massive misuse of power. The policeman was incompetent or an inherent bully and should be prosecuted.

Anyone who says that such action should NEVER be taken has obviously never worked with children. I have seen ten year olds who are out of control - and a short sharp shock would have done them the world of good. Let's stop pretending that all children are sweet innocent little things....remember the case of Jamie Bulger?
S. Regan 11-24-2009 @ 7:04AM
This is absolutely ridiculous, using violence to 'calm' a child is never right. Action should be brought against the officer in question. How can a grown man not control a ten year old girl without using violence? Absolutely horrendous.

Let us hope that our own Police learn from this and Taser those who think they can do what they like, and get away with it, 10 year olds or any age...(however the old do gooders bus will be along shortly to cause an outcry)
cazza 11-20-2009 @ 6:36AM
Never under any circumstances it is justified to use a weapon on a child. The police officer's action equals severe child abuse. He should be taking the parents into custody for asking him to Taser their child in the first place. Unruly children are difficult to cope with but what next - water cannons, plastic bullets? Where will it end?

this is absolutely unbelievable - Dr. Vernon Coleman ( i'm sure it was him ) who wrote for a woman's magazine , said a couple of years ago :' wait , in 10 years , the u.s.a. and Britain will be the most Fascist countries in the world ' . to be honest , we both come bottom in all international Child Wellbeing Reports - this is almost completely unbelievable - maybe David Icke hasn't been wrong after all??? see his website about Btitain and the U.S.A. ( and the E.U. ) . I feel so sorry for the 10 year old girl - it's inhuman and inhumane to tazer a young child - it's completely barbaric - i thought they were only to be used on violent or dangerous criminals ??? this poor girl will be scarred for life - is this why i know so many Americans and Brits emmigrate to other countries now ???

WHAT KIND OF MOTHER CALLS THE POLICE JUST BECAUSE SHE DOESNT WANT TO SHOWER???? YOU SHOULD CONTROL UR OWN CHILD, WASTING POLICE TIME AND TAXPAYERS MONEY

You are so right. Why are the police called for a domestic situation with a young child? Why did the police not laugh this mother into embarrassment when she phoned? Why did the mother not call Childline or Samaritans or NSPCC or social services if her child was so out of control. This beggars belief.
This was not a situation on the street where the child had a weapon or was threatening anyone, she was refusing to do something which did not affect anyone else negatively only herself, and even that not to any great degree. She was in her own home and she was curled into a ball not attacking anyone! Even if she was attacking her parents, if every parent with a child who hit them called the police where would we all be. Parents should be able to restrain and discipline their own children unless the child is physically too large or is using a weapon.
The policeman should be prosecuted for assault and use of excessive force without provocation.
The mother should be prosecuted for wasting police time.
The mother should also take classes in child rearing. When a ten year old is ruling the roost the mother has gone wrong somewhere.
hazey 11-19-2009 @ 12:57PM
Exactly right nelzy, why has a mother called the police, and why did they respond to the call? Bad parenting is the reason we have so many problems in this country now, tazer should only be used to control when officers or others are at risk, a bucket of cold water may have worked just as well!!
bill 11-19-2009 @ 3:55PM
i agree with nelzy what sort of mother cant control her child. the parent should be the person being vilified here not the officer. i think in the same position as the officer i would have thrown the mother in the shower and tasered her. what a stupid idiot. she probably wouldnt be allowed to keep a monkey without a licence but she is allowed to have kids, which is really what the problem is. anybody who has such a lack of control in the home should not be raising kids in fact anyone so useless shouldnt even be allowed to have a phone to be able to ring the police.
roadrunner 12-11-2009 @ 6:05PM
I quite agree. This parent doesn't deserve to keep her child, The poor 10 has been subjrcted to physical abuse by police while her parents watched. How discusting is that. The poor child should be placed with a caring family who can help her sort her needs out and with the right care she may even shower on her own. At this moment in time i'm sure this child is mentally and physically scared and needs love not abuse. She is only 10 at the end of the day. The police officer should be done for abuse of a minor.

As an ex UK police officer now policing in Canada and without knowing the full circumstances of the incident other than what the media release states. Police officers are issued appointments, which include the Tazer, and it is up to the individual officer to justify the use of force on each and every occasion. It is not for the people with the gift of hindsight to judge officers actions. Police force policies (in my opinion) should only be there as a guideline to officers. If I was at a situation alone and I felt that someone would get hurt if I needed to affect an arrest then I would conduct a dynamic risk assessment, which includes how am I going to affect this arrest without myself or the other person receiving injuries. If anyone who I was going to arrest for an offence was displaying behaviour as documented by the officer above then I too would use a level of force that I could justify if challenged.
