So here's how the Friday blog roundup gets put together: First of all I read every mummy blog which exists. I assign points to each for style, relevancy, good punctuation, level of hysteria etc. I make an enormous spreadsheet the size of a house, draw a graph, have a tantrum, and after much judgly head scratching, arrive at a top five.

Nah, not really. To be honest, I just pick five good ones then stop. Have you seen how many mummy blogs there are these days? Your eyes would freeze over if you even attempted to read them all.

The one rule I try to stick to is that featured posts will have been published within the previous week. Mostly (though not always) the blogs are UK-based. Sometimes people will nominate one of their own posts – this is fine, you can do this by leaving a comment here or contacting me on Twitter. I like to feature different blogs each week, so I'm always on the lookout for new voices.

So what were some of the best parenting blog posts of 2009?

There is so much terrific writing out there, it's virtually impossible to choose. So I have delegated the task to the members of the British Mummy Bloggers group, and these are some of their recommendations:

Several people referenced Sleep is for the Weak as a quality blog worth reading, try this post as a sample. Another blog that's proved itself to be of consistently high quality is Who's the Mummy? AKA the adventures of Flea the Invincible. How's this for smart parenting advice?

Also admired by many is Living with Kids, which is always quick off the mark with current issues of interest to parents like, er... who do you fancy? Perhaps this discussion will be a comfort to Dulwich Divorcee, who was thwarted in her quest to be united with her true soul mate this year.

The Missy M Missives was nominated for this great post about giving up smoking – very apt for this time of year. Not Such a Yummy Mummy had many people nodding their heads in agreement when she wrote about all the things she'd like to do...one day. More Than Just a Mother posed a question many have wondered about: Is there sex after babies? Some of us didn't have all that much beforehand, which makes the difference minimal.

The family travel blog Have a Lovely Time went from strength to strength this year, ending up by harnessing the power of mummy bloggers to raise over £500 for children's cancer charities with its Great Panto Review.

One post that sticks out in my memory this year, for the clever handling of a simple and funny idea, is Babyrambles' That's Not My Mummy... Also memorable, and not always in a good way, are the Poo Stories from Maternal Tales from the South Coast. Hands up if you too were haunted by the once seen, never forgotten giant turd? And speaking of all things turdular, Are We Nearly There Yet Mummy? baffled all of us with this...this...thing. What is that and how can I wipe the image from my memory?

Diary of a Desperate Exmoor Woman was cheered by many in June when she used her blog to stick up for her local area. The locality had been criticised repeatedly by the Daily Mail's Liz Jones, but as every good blogger knows, there are several sides to every story.

Whilst many of these posts are lighthearted, some of the most affecting stories deal with the darker side of life. Take this about Post-Natal Depression from Yummy Mummy Tips. Not Wrong, Just Different wrote of her decision to have a double mastectomy.

The business of mummy blogging has come under great scrutiny this year, and Cafe Bebe shows that no-one is immune to a crisis of confidence. Why are we all doing this again?
