We've been hearing about Bisphenol A (BPA) for years – that exposure to it can mimic oestrogen, may increase the likelihood of obesity, and can have adverse neurological effects on memory, learning and mood.

BPA is used to make clear, shatter-proof plastics including baby bottles and the insides of food and drink cans.

Just this month the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that "the National Toxicology Program at the National Institutes of Health and FDA have some concern about the potential effects of BPA on the brain, behaviour, and prostate gland in foetuses, infants, and young children." They are now making moves to remove BPA from the food supply.

If you are concerned about BPA affecting your child's development, you should not change or cut out infant formula or food. The benefits of good nutrition greatly outweigh the risk of adverse affects from BPA exposure.

There is, however, something you can do to remove some exposure to BPA right now. The Born Free range of bottles and cups are all BPA-Free. They also sell glass bottles and BPA-Free dummies.

My son is eight months old and has been breastfed. He never took to bottles all that well, so when he started eating food I moved him straight onto drinking out of a cup.

I tried several different sippy cups, but he did best just drinking straight from a normal cup without a spout.

I found, however, that when we went out, taking a drink along with us was difficult. I tried again to find a non-spill sippy cup that he would take. Like with my search for a bottle, I ended up buying several different types with very little success.

Until I got the Born Free trainer cup. IT IS GENIUS!!! First, it doesn't spill so I can take it out in my bag without worry. Second, the spout is soft, not hard and it's a lot longer than other spouts. Third, he doesn't have to suck very hard in order to get the drink out. As he's never got the hang of bottles, he doesn't know how to suck hard enough to work the valves on other cups.

The first time he tried the Born Free trainer cup, he chewed it for a few seconds then just started to suck on it. Now, only a week on, he's holding onto the handles himself and though he doesn't always lift it high enough to get anything from it, he's very keen to drink himself.

BPA-free benefits aside, I will definitely be sticking with Born Free for a while.
