I was a little taken aback when my child brought home a Valentine's card he'd made at nursery. It's nice to know that he loves me and all that, but I couldn't help feeling that it was a little bit inappropriate. Yet I have heard other parents say they find it cute when little children send pseudo-romantic Valentine's Day cards to each other.

What do you think? Does everything have to be child-friendly? Isn't it about time that we stopped the children muscling in on Valentine's Day and kept it as it's meant to be – a celebration of romantic love between adults.

It's not as if children have a shortage of celebrations to enjoy. We're not long past the toyfest of Christmas, and the chocfest of Easter isn't far away.

So save this one for the grown-ups please.

We don't need bakeries selling heart-shaped biscuits – yet another thing for my children to pester me to buy. We don't need special craft ideas and Be My Valentine colouring-in pages.

Thank goodness we haven't gone as far as the USA, where apparently some school classrooms will be decorated in a Valentine's theme, and children are encouraged to exchange cards and eat heart-shaped sweets. And I will definitely not be decking out my offspring in special Valentine's Day outfits.

What do you think? Has Valentine's Day become too kiddy-friendly? Or is the whole thing too commercial anyway? Or do you love it because you're just a romantic at heart? Leave a comment and have your say.
