Olesia asks:

Please help me to find an answer to this question: Does a medical abortion affect a person's ability to get pregnant afterwards? And if so, how long after if it does? Thank you very much in advance.

Here's the life coach's reply:

Dear Olesia

I'm guessing that the story behind this question can't have been easy, so I hope you're getting some support and love from the people around you now.

Your doctor is the best person to talk to about this, but these are the basic facts:

Medical abortion is the term given to indicate use of the abortion pill, rather than a surgical procedure. Normally this would only be given very early on, before nine weeks of pregnancy.

It's possible to ovulate as soon as two weeks after a termination, so in theory a person could get pregnant again pretty quickly. There is no evidence to suggest that use of the abortion pill will affect future fertility.

But having an abortion is a big deal in anybody's life, so I would caution against rushing into another huge life decision. Physically you could get pregnant again very soon, but do wait until you feel mentally ready. Do you feel up to it? Are you sure this is what you want right now?

There's a good article here on pregnancy after abortion. Of course all of this is assuming that you're asking the question because you want to get pregnant again. If in fact you don't, then don't take any risks because another pregnancy could happen quickly. Talk to your GP or local family planning clinic about which method of birth control is best for you. You can find out where your nearest family planning clinic is at this link.

Whatever you want to do next, take care of yourself. Eat and sleep well, rest as much as you can.

Best wishes,

Joanne
