Q: I will soon be having my 20 week scan. We are really looking forward to it but can't decide if we should ask the baby's sex. Help!

A: The 20 week scan is a pivotal moment in pregnancy, not only because this scan will determine the health and development of the baby, but also because it is your big moment to find out, once and for all (more or less!) what you are having.

Obviously you have two choices. Some people can't imagine going through nine months of pregnancy without finding out the sex as the excitement is often just too much, and it's also an opportunity to get organised and plan the names, nursery, clothes, bedding and blankets etc.

On the other hand, modern science has provided an answer to so many of the world's mysteries that some people want to keep the sex a true surprise, just as nature intended. Some women also say that not knowing the sex provided them with a final rush of energy during the exhausting last stages of labour, as the determination to discover the sex provided a much needed energy boost.

There is a third option, which is to opt for just one of you finding out the sex, but this could prove a difficult secret to keep and the truth may well come out accidentally! Additionally, you also need to decide whether or not to keep the sex a secret from family and friends.

One other thing to bear in mind is that the scan can't always detect the sex. The baby has to be in the correct position in order for the ultrasound to capture the gender. There is a small chance that the sex may be incorrect and you may end up with a very real and very unexpected surprise!

At the end of the day, talk it through with your partner and see how you feel on the day. It could be that you change your mind once you get there, so have a plan but expect the unexpected!
