A day-old baby girl has been found zipped up in a suitcase and abandoned in a left luggage facility near a hotel.
A porter was alerted to her presence after hearing cries coming from the unattended room.
The case had earlier been found on the pavement by a passer-by and put in the luggage room by hotel staff. They had glanced inside it, but thought it was filled only with clothes.
The baby girl has been named Marie by staff caring for her at Altona Pediatric Hospital in Hamburg, Germany
A spokesperson for the hospital said the baby was underweight and that her umbilical cord had been tied with thin thread, suggesting her mother gave birth without medical assistance.
Axel von Wense, head of Altona's newborn ward, told reporters the baby could have suffocated or frozen to death.
The police have urged anyone with information about the baby or her mother to come forward.
