AP Journalists surround Wang Yue's grieving parents

A two-year-old girl who was run over twice in the street by two different drivers and ignored by 18 people has died in hospital.

The story of her battle for survival hit the headlines earlier this week after a shocking CCTV video of her being knocked down and crushed was uploaded onto the Internet.

The little girl, Wang Yue - nicknamed Yue Yue - appeared to be in agony as numerous people walked past, choosing to ignore, rather than help her.

Finally, she was rescued and taken to hospital by her mother. But she died of brain failure today.

The disturbing incident happened in the southern Chinese town of Foshan in the province of Guandong.

Police have detained the drivers of both vans on suspicion of causing a traffic accident but have not said what formal charges they would face and if manslaughter would be among them now that the girl has died.

According to reports, her family received almost £30,000 to help with payments for the medical treatment following the scenes in Guangfo Hardware Market.

Guangzhou military district general hospital, where she was being treated, said: "Her injuries were too severe and the treatment had no effect."

Commentators say that in China many people are reluctant to help because they fear being blamed, which has led to calls for a Good Samaritan law amid the soul-searching the video had sparked.
