A pensioner of 67 with myriad health problems has become a dad after his 31-year-old wife underwent IVF treatment.
-of-two Malcolm Lawrence has reportedly had 12 heart attacks, suffers a chronic lung disorder, and back and hip pain. But despite this, he and his young bride were determined to have kids.
Wife Ann-Marie gave birth to baby Cerys-May Lawrence at the Princess of Wales Hospital, Bridgend last month, after an amazing IVF feat using sperm Malcolm donated to University Hospital Cardiff 10 years ago.
reports the OAP cannot father babies naturally following surgery on his bladder 30 years ago, and after donating his sperm, it was left frozen at the hospital until Ann-Marie reached the age at which women can have IVF on the NHS.
The couple underwent intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) treatment, where a single sperm is injected directly into the woman's eggs. Amazingly for Ann-Marie, she fell pregnant on the first attempt at the procedure.
The entire family have welcomed Malcolm's new arrival, with his 29-year-old son Gavin saying he was 'surprised but over the moon' to have a sister nearly thirty years younger than him. His own children, Joshua, seven, and four-year-old Holly-May are also thrilled with their newborn AUNTIE.
Malcolm - who will celebrate his 68th birthday next week - said he and Ann-Marie are 'over the moon' with their new baby.
The retired nurse said: "I still can't believe it has happened. I am 67 and the wife is 31 so it's a bit of a rare one.
"There have been some people who say things like 'you are too old to be a father' and others saying my health isn't good enough, but they don't realise how heartbreaking those comments are.
"My wife is 31 and a child of her own is what she always wanted and now she's got one."
His wife added that she was 'not bothered about the age difference'. She said she was just 'so happy to have a daughter.'
Wow! What do you think about this story? Happy news, or just a bit too old?
