A video posted on YouTube of a 68-year-old grandmother being mercilessly bullied by a group of children on a school bus has resulted in an online collection of $375,000 (£240,000) being raised by outraged viewers.
Karen Klein, a school bus monitor in New York, was vilely taunted and tormented by a gang of four 13-year-old boys.
The shocking 10-minute video shows the disgusting tirade the youngsters directed at the tearful granny, calling her 'fat,' 'ugly' and a 'troll'. As she cried, the children jabbed her.
One student told her: "You don't have a family because they all killed themselves because they don't want to be near you." Heartbreakingly, Ms Klein's oldest son killed himself 10 years ago.
However, magnanimous Ms Klein told CBC's that she decided not to press charges against the youngsters "because these kids - they're kids."
"I'd hate to see it go in their file or whatever. They're only 13 years old," she said. "Middle-school children are a different breed of children."
Since the video went viral Karen says she has been hugged in the street by strangers and received messages of support:
"I can't believe the people and how nice they've been. I mean strange people stop by and they give me a hug," she said.
One man was so disgusted by the bullying, he started a fund raising campaign to raise money to send Karen on holiday.
Max Sidorov, of Toronto set a goal to raise $5,000 (about £3,700) for Karen. He told CBC News he had suffered bullying as a young Ukrainian immigrant from Ukraine, and when he learned that Karen only earned $15,506 (just under £10,000) a year he decided to raise the money to give her a good holiday.
"Lets give her something she will never forget, a vacation of a lifetime!" he wrote on the fund-raising website.
The drive has now exceeded all expectations with more than $375,000 being pledged.
Mr Sidorov told CBC Radio that he hoped the money would give Karen the opportunity to stop working:
"I think she's going to retire with this money, and I hope she does. It's enough money to send her on a very much earned retirement," he said.
Karen said the father of one of the abusive teenagers offered her a sincere apology and added that a written apology from his son would be forthcoming.

Poor, poor woman. How could those kids be so cruel? And why didn't anyone else on the bus stop them?!

I assume she is there to monitor the behaviour of the kids on the bus, so what if they had been doing this to other children how effective would she have been given she didn't stand up for herself. I don't agree with her that they are kids and they shouldn't have stuff on their file. Of course they should the sooner they learn the consequences of their actions and the punishments associated with being a little sxxt the better.
If the woman doesn't respect herself enough to stand up for herself then no on else will treat her with respect, the ones crying on this bus should have been the brats.
How awful! I feel so sorry for Karen that is absolutely horrible. Someone on that bus should have stuck up for her. I hope, like the father on the video, that the other parents punish their children and make them at the very least apologise. How lovely though at the generosity of strangers raising all this money for Karen - maybe those boys should take note?

or the website that was setup to raise $5k for this lady, should put a reward out, $50 for every punch in the face of these little s**ts that is filmed and broadcast on youtube, let them feel whats its like to recieve, what they feel is ok to hand out to others...
A very sad story its good to know there are kind people out there and hope she enjoys a good holiday.
I shopped at a Lidl store yesterday the abuse, just because I said I'd not finished putting my purchases on the counter, was terrible it continued outside the shop and ended when they drove from the other side of the car park to continue shouting abuse from their car, the problem I'm English have lived here for 50 years.
who was shouting the abuse at you ?
If it was not white kids report it to the police as a rascist incident.
The problem is white people dont complain about the rascist abuse they get so the figures look very one sided, and in reality it happens both ways.
I was out shopping in London NW5 and saw 3 kids sitting on a garden wall. To my horror they were throwing stones at a very old lady. She was hobbling along with her walking stick and shopping bag. When I shouted at them they threw stones at me!! My husband picked me up in the car, when I told him what had happened, he stopped the car right by the boys jumped out and pushed each one of them off the wall into the overgrown garden. Justice was served, that was about 30 years ago, so bullying old folk is nothing new.

Because they were afraid if they intervened they would get stabbed or the kids would call the police and have THEM arrested.
it was a school bus and I expect the other children were scared of the bullies .
