Snake attacks sleeping baby

This is the stuff of every parent's nightmare: you go in to comfort your crying baby and discover a snake wrapped around his foot!

Just days before his first birthday William Winan's was napping in his cot, when he was attacked by a python which had escaped from a neighbour's house in Illinois, US.

The baby was treated for bites and bruise marks and is doing well, according to his dad, Devin Winans.

"If the snake had wrapped around his neck, honestly, we probably would not be having his birthday today," Devin told ABC news yesterday.

Devin said he heard his son crying and went to check on him. But when he reached into William's cot he said he felt something 'slimy'.

"I immediately turned the light on and saw the snake, a ball python wrapped around his foot, constricting it and trying to eat his foot," Devin said.

The quick thinking father used a blanket to remove the snake from his son's foot.

Police determined the reptile somehow slithered away from its home next door and issued its owner a citation.

Whats the difference between a dog and snake attack? If the child is harmed or endangered then hte animal MUST be destroyed for everyones safety. How can you issue a citation; this animal is doing what comes naturally in an unnatural setting. If you wont destroy the animal, destroy the useless owner & put this animal in wild where it should be.

Well, to answer your question, there are many differences between snake and dog attacks, where would you like me to start? The animal does not have to be destroyed in either case, really but it is especially pointless in the scenario with the snake. No snake species preys regularly on humans. They do not develop a taste for human flesh, despite any moronic horror story you may have seen or heard. No, the purpose of killing such an animal after this is not for safety but for blind and brutal vengeance. It is pointless.

I'm just happy that the cute baby is safe and alive, best wishes to his mum and dad.
Respect goes to the dad whose instinct reaction released the snake from his son.....it will no doubt bring them closer as baby grows up and understands this scenario....

I cannot believe most of the posts here. Not many seem to have sympathy for this poor child. Discussions on the habits of pythons are irrelevant here; and the cops issued the owner with a "citation"? Whatever is that? Sounds very much like congratulaitons to me. Wild creatures should be in the wild not in homes. People who keep exotic pets should be driven to the nearest jungle and left there with all the animals which they can then keep to their hearts' content.

I have a ton of sympathy for this child and I'm very glad that he is going to make a recovery. The owner should definitely be charged with more than just a citation.
