Teachers turning to Wikipedia to plan their RE lessons

Researchers have found that RE teachers are turning to Wikipedia to equip themselves with the necessary knowledge needed to plan their lessons.

A study by the National Association of Teachers of RE (NATRE) found that primary school teaching staff did not feel their teacher training had properly equipped them to teach the subject.

A quarter of teachers revealed they'd had no specific training in religious education, while half claimed they'd had just three hours or less of instruction.

The Telegraph reports that just under six out of 10 teachers described themselves as having 'little or no confidence' to teach the subject when they entered the profession.

Of the teachers polled 67% confessed they had turned to 'web based resources' such as Wikipedia to source information to plan lessons with.

The National Association of Teachers of RE is said to be concerned that teachers are relying on 'misleading, inaccurate or even offensive material' in order to teach what has been described as an 'increasingly sensitive' subject.
