Christmas gift guide: Presents for children aged 3 - 5 years
Filed under: Toys & Games, Christmas
It's at the preschool stage when the festive season really comes to life for children. They're all dressed up for nativity plays, eagerly awaiting Santa's arrival for weeks on end, and beside themselves with joy on Christmas morning, when they realise that, yes, the great man in red and white brought exactly what they've been longing for AND managed to fit it all down the chimney.
What to consider:
Like toddlers, three to five-year-olds still love pretend and role play. Concentration spans may well be improving, so sit down activities such as puzzles and arts and crafts are popular, but equally, physical toys bring good play value, as preschoolers have plenty of energy to expend.
Children this age tend to have more developed likes and dislikes than their younger counterparts, so it's worth getting ideas from them about what they might enjoy (although hand them a toy catalogue and ask for preferences at your peril – they'll probably say 'all of it'!)
If you don't want to ask for specific present requests, do try and get a sense of what kind of child you're buying for if they're not your own. As before, avoid assuming all girls adore dolls' houses/ princess/ fairy toys and all boys love toy guns/ soldiers.
Pre-schoolers will be beginning to learn skills which are pre-cursors to reading and writing later on. They might start to get interested in letters and counting or enjoy putting crayons to paper – there are tons of fun but educational toys out there which can help with all this.
Parents might appreciate clothing as a gift for their fast-growing child but be warned, unless it's something which really appeals to the recipient themselves, that T-shirt or sweater might be opened and immediately cast aside for a toy.
-
Keep this Hamax Sno Rider Sledge, £20, from Cotswold Outdoor at the ready in case we face another seriously snowy Winter! Handles on the side add a feeling of security if your child isn’t much of a daredevil, whilst the rope and toggle make towing offspring around easier. Probably best as an extra rather than main present given that, unless we’re blessed with a White Christmas (or you live in Lapland), they won’t be able to actually use it on the big day.

-
This Electronic Cash Register and Scanner, £22, from ELC is an essential classic for games of shops among preschoolers. Play money and groceries are thrown in with the till, which features a beeping scanner, a working chip and pin console and a microphone for all those ‘mummy to the dairy aisle’ announcements.

-
‘A dog is for life not just for Christmas’ goes the old ad campaign…Ikea’s Gosig pet range, which includes this Dalmatian, £6.99 might not be quite the same as a real one, but hey they don’t need walking or clearing up after at least! There’s a choice of pooches, including the cute and cuddly dalmatian shown here. Accessories are key to making this a more interesting playtime proposition but are all very reasonably-priced and include £1.99 for a food bowl or dog coat and £4.99 for a grooming set or dog carrier.

-
Tired of the kids nabbing your netbook or thieving your tablet? Invest in one of this Christmas’ hottest toys, the LeapPad Explorer, £79.99, from Leapfrog and they can have a gadget all to themselves. Easy for children to navigate and strong enough to withstand whatever they throw at it (literally).

-
The Le Toy Van Mayberry Manor Dolls House, around £100, from Amazon is a gorgeous dolls’ house spread over three floors, with opening windows and doors and staircase. Sturdily-made and wipe-clean so it should last many years. Furniture and residents need to be bought separately, with this set being a good starting point.

-
This portable Peppa Pig World of Playsets, £19.79 from Tesco opens up to reveal a whole town for Peppa Pig to have adventures in. Comes with a launch pad and two figurines dressed up ready for intergalactic missions.

-
Orchard Toys make a range of fantastic board games which mix fun and education - ideal for a bit of learning by stealth. Not just for the boys – plenty of girls will spend many happy hours playing with wooden railway sets too. Compatible with Brio, Wooden Thomas and most other wooden train track (e.g. Ikea or Tesco).
