Easter eggs on test
-
Easter Tasting Collection Dark Chocolate Egg, £14.99, from Greenandblacks.co.uk and supermarkets nationwide.

A classic for dark chocolate lovers, this large egg comes with a tasting box of miniature bars, with everything from white chocolate, honeycomb and luxury cherry included.

Taste: A strong, almost bitter taste, this egg will last longer than milk chocolate varieties as the chocolate is so rich. The high cocoa content makes it perfect for chocolate lovers who are in it for the taste not novelty value. 8/10

Packaging: Eye-catching gold makes the egg looks pricy, although there’s quite a lot of waste with the packaging around the tasting bars. 6/10

Value for money: If you’re going to spend £15 on an Easter egg, you won’t be disappointed. The extra bars make it seem like it goes on for ever. 8/10

Buy it for: Granny.

Total score: 22/30

-
Assorted Children’s Easter Eggs, £1 each or four for £3, from Poundland.

Cheap and cheerful, these £1 character eggs do exactly what it says on the tin (or shell in this case), but the chocolate was surprising tasty considering each one is only £1.

Taste: Pretty basic and bland, but it would suit chocoholic children who are in it for how many they got rather than taste. 4/10

Packaging: Bright and colourful, there’s a character for every child, whether you have a Barbie Princess or a Cars 2 fanatic on your hands. 8/10

Value for money: These are perfect for Easter egg hunts as you can get four for just £3, but the taste suits the price. Feels like it should come with a toy attached, but maybe we’re just greedy? 7/10

Buy it for: Small children who can’t get enough (that’s chocolate or novelty characters).

Total score: 19/30

-
Guylian’s Easter egg and box of chocs combo, £5.99, from major supermarkets.

A silky, smooth chocolate egg with a box of Original Sea Shell chocs included. This one will really last and is perfect for sharing.

Taste: The chocolate is really smooth, and has the traditional slightly nutty taste of Guylian choc. 8/10

Packaging: Nothing special and quite a bit of waste with the extra little box. The gold wrap around the egg is a nice touch and you would recognise it a mile off with the Guylian branding. 6/10

Value for money: You get loads of chocolate for under £6, This one will really last and is perfect for sharing. 9/10

Buy it for: Anyone. The taste is pretty universal.

Total score: 23/30

-
Union Jack Egg, £12.95, from Chococo.co.uk.

A stunning milk chocolate egg with a layer of white chocolate on the outside. The egg is studded with freeze dried raspberries and strawberries that have been coated in chocolate to keep them crunchy.

Taste: Delicious, this is the egg that keeps on giving. First milk chocolate, then white, followed by sweet raspberry and strawberry (which made us feels miles less quilty for wolfing it down). 9/10

Packaging: Bright and eye-catching with minimal waste. 8/10

Value for money: Pricey for the size but not for the taste. Worth it as a treat. 9/10

Buy it for: Yourself! (kidding, honestly). Teenage girls would love the classy look and feel of this one.

Total score: 26/30

-
Chocolate Bunny, £1, from Poundland.

A hollow milk chocolate classic for a quid. This looks a bit like children’s shampoo bottles you can pick up in the supermarket.

Taste: Basic chocolate, dull but easy to munch through without realising (dangerous times). 5/10

Packaging: Minimal waste with this one as the bunny is tighty wrapped in foil. Check your recycling rules, and be careful bringing it home as it could easily get bashed (and nobody wants a bunny with a smashed ear on Easter morning). 6/10

Value for money: Does exactly what you would expect for £1. 6/10

Buy it for: Young kids who will love the shape.

Total score: 17/30

-
Heavenly Honeycomb Easter Egg, £12.95, from Chococo.co.uk.

A milk chocolate egg packed with honeycomb chunks throughout the chocolate. On the outside the egg is hand painted with yellow and orange swirls.

Taste: Deliciously creamy and smooth, you can taste the quality chocolate in this one. The honeycomb wasn’t particularly well distributed in the chocolate (a quarter of the egg went without) but delicious all the same. 8/10

Packaging: Bright and colourful, this is the same stylish box as the Union Jack white choc egg. 8/10

Value for money: Pricey for the size, and not as yummy as the Union Jack egg from the same makers. 7/10

Buy it for: A friend or auntie who appreciates a spot of luxury.

Total score: 23/30

-
Choceur Flame Egg, £2.99, from Aldi.

A milk chocolate egg with small pack of six ‘chocolate box’ chocs inside. A good size, and extra treat inside once you’ve cracked it open.

Taste: Super creamy chocolate, but very sugary and sweet. This had a hazelnut twist to it – if you’ve got a Nutella fan, it will go down a treat. 8/10

Packaging: This egg is sold in glamorous gold with a big bow, and looks a lot more expensive than the £2.99 price tag. 8/10

Value for money: Tastes much more expensive than it should, and the extra chocs inside are a nice treat. 9/10

Buy it for: A good friend.

Total score: 25/30

-
Gwynedd Confectioners Chocolate Happy Easter Chicks, Happy Easter Breakfast Set andTrio of Chocolate Sheep, £8.50 for a two pack from Amazon.

These fun character chocs are sold in packs of two, with milk chocolate ducks, white and dark chocolate sheep and milk and white chocolate eggs to choose from.

Taste: Delicious and very creamy, there’s loads of choice. All three varieties are very rich. 8/10

Packaging: Basic but it’s all recyclable and you get to see the products which is a bonus. The pretty yellow bow is a nice touch. 7/10

Value for money: You basically get six large chocolates for £8.50, which isn’t too bad considering how attractive they are. The details painted on each ups their value. 7/10

Buy it for: Yourself as a treat if you’re running around over the bank holiday. The rich taste has an air of luxury.

Total score: 22/30

-
Uovo Decorato, £17.95, from Carluccio’s.

This large and delicious looking egg comes in milk, white or dark. Hand-decorated with stylish swirls, we tasted the milk chocolate variety.

Taste: Insanely smooth, this, quite frankly spectacular egg screams luxury, and has the taste of delicious European, creamy chocolate. 10/10

Packaging: Sitting pretty on a paper egg-cup, this huge egg comes wrapped up in plastic to show itself off. Recycling the plastic could be tricky, but other than that, 10/10 for glamour and minimal waste.

Value for money: At nearly £20, this isn’t your run-of-the-mill, whack it in your trolley Easter egg, but if you’re going for proper luxury, this is the one to splash out on. 9/10

Buy it for: Your partner

Total score: 29/30
