Your pregnancy - week 39

Welcome to week 39
Are you planning to breastfeed? There's no disputing that breast milk is best for your baby - it's perfectly formulated to give your newborn all the necessary nutrients and passes immunity to your baby.
To breastfeed successfully, make sure you have everything you need to make you comfortable. Some women find a footstool helps them bring their babies up to a good height for feeding and keeps their lower backs comfy. Some mums swear by breastfeeding cushions, others are happy to use a bed pillow to help keep the baby in a good position to feed. Your midwife will have lots of practical information on breastfeeding and breastfeeding workshops running in the hospital or local area. Read our feature on breastfeeding for beginners.
If you're planning to bottle feed your baby, this will be a perfectly adequate form of nourishment as long as you follow the manufacturer's instructions. Make sure you have all the necessary equipment: bottles and teats, a steriliser, bottle brushes and formula. For breastfeeders it's worth considering buying a breast pump, bottles and a steriliser to widen your options.
Inside story
Your baby is almost at the average birth weight, weighing in this week at around 3.25kg (just over 7lb). The crown-to-rump measurement is about 36cm (almost 14.5in). There's not much more to say about life inside the womb, except that your baby's continuing to lay down fat stores in preparation for after the birth, and an upsurge in your hormones means the genitals are rather engorged in both sexes. This is perfectly normal and things will revert to normal shortly after birth.
On the outside
You probably won't have grown this week, and your uterus will be sitting at the same height as last week. If you haven't experienced Braxton-Hicks contractions yet, you might feel them from this week, although it's important at this stage to make sure that you're not actually having labour contractions. You can do this by recording the sensations: if they come regularly but don't increase in intensity, they're probably not the real thing; but if you notice that they come with increasing frequency and get more uncomfortable, you could be in true labour. Call your midwife for advice if you're unsure.
Things to think about
Have you had a practice with your baby equipment yet? It's well worth have a dummy run with everything, from feeding equipment like your steriliser to the baby monitor. Pushchairs can be particularly tricky to master, as can baby car seats. Practice strapping the car seat into the car before the birth. You don't want to be outside fiddling with the straps on your first journey home. You may feel quite flustered and unsure of yourself when it's time to leave the hospital, or when you venture out alone with your new baby for the first time, so do use the time you have left before the birth to familiarise yourselves with everything fully.
Some couples plan a 'babymoon' – which is a period of time spent with your partner and your baby, just the three of you. It could last for a day or so, or for as long as you want to keep your newborn to yourselves, but don't be surprised if friends and family find it hard to stay away - they're probably longing to see your baby. If you do fancy the idea, make sure you have all the supplies you and your baby will need and let friends and family know that you don't want to be disturbed, but that you'll be in touch shortly to make arrangements for them to visit.

Bizarre pregnancy conditions and cravings
- Pregnant woman brays like a donkey
A teenager with Tourette's Syndrome started braying like a donkey days after she fell pregnant! Cody Hagel, 18, - who has suffered with the condition for four years - started mimicking the animals on her family's farm. She told reporters: "My Tourette's started with the onset of puberty and I think my pregnancy hormones are probably to blame for the change in my tics. The braying started pretty much immediately after I fell pregnant and I've been suffering with it ever since!”

- Mum-to-be eats furniture polish
Forget gherkins and pickles onions, mum-to-be Emma Veness craved furniture polish throughout her pregnancy! Emma ‘ate’ the polish up to three times a day during her second pregnancy. And if you’re wondering how she ‘ate’ a spray, it’s all about spraying onto your fingers and licking the polish off. Naturally.

- Mum-to-be's burning blisters caused by allergy to her unborn baby
Zuleika Closs, 26, developed a burning, itchy rash all over her body when she was 20 weeks pregnant with her son Emmanuel. It's thought she has pemphigoid gestationis, a condition which affects one in two million women, caused by placenta tissue entering the mother's blood stream and reacting with her immune system. After Emmanuel was born, the rash died down, but the mum from Cornwall has been told it could return if she falls pregnant again.

- Pregnant woman eats newspaper
Mum Anna Curran was unable to stop munching on newspapers during her pregnancy, even keeping shredded copies in her bag for snacks throughout the day! “I can't help it. I just need to get the flavour of it,” said Anna. “I could be sitting in the bingo hall and I'll start ripping out pages of the newspaper and all the people look at me going, 'What is she doing?' I sit and tear the white bits off the edges of the pages and keep them in a bag so I can eat them while shopping."

- Mum-to-be craves roadkill
Expectant mum Alison Brierley hit the headlines when she admitted eating roadkill during her pregnancy! The mum-to-be collected and cooked dead animals near her Harrogate home throughout her pregnancy, explaining: “Usually I eat really healthily but now I'm pregnant I get strong cravings for road kill. It's more gamey than other meat and I love the taste. I also don't have to feel guilty about eating it because I know it's had a completely free range and natural life."

Famous bumps on parade
- Victoria Beckham
After publicly announcing she wouldn’t be stripping off for the camera while pregnant, David Beckham took this quick snap of a very pregnant Posh, apparently without her knowing anything about it. Hmm, all looks a bit staged to us…

Victoria says: ‘I'm so proud to be pregnant and I feel so blessed and so happy, I really do. I won't be taking my clothes off. I don't think anyone needs to see that, other than my husband.’

- Demi Moore
The original and best, this is the pose that sparked a thousand copies in magazines around the world, starring everyone from Danielle Lloyd to Christina Aguilera, Britney and erm, Lisa from Steps. This iconic piccie of mum of three Demi is still gorgeous all these years later.

- Sienna Miller
Heavily pregnant Sienna posed for a nude painting in 2012. Artist Jonathan Yeo painted Sienna shortly before the arrival of her first baby, Marlowe, as part of a series of portraits, including Nicole Kidman and model Erin O'Connor.

- Jessica Simpson
Jess posed for ELLE magazine shortly before giving birth to her daughter, Maxwell Drew. She showed off her enormous bump while confirming speculation she was expecting a little girl.

- Carla Bruni
Carla was papped frockling on the beach with husband, French President Nicolas Sarkozy. The First Lady is rumoured to be expecting twins, but showed off a pretty neat bump in her stylish two piece.

- Mariah Carey
While twins Moroccan and Monroe were still tucked up in Mariah’s belly, she took the opportunity to proudly show off her expanding tummy, by painting it to make a colourful butterfly. A bit odd, but you can just imagine Mariah grinning from ear to ear when she posed for this lovely snap.

- Rachel Zoe
Stylist to the stars, Rachel let it all hang out with some ill-fitting maternity togs when she was expecting son, Skyler. The sheer material on the top showed off her rounded tummy, and, call us old fashioned, but flashing your bra when pregnant isn’t the greatest look ever, right?

- Jessica Alba
Here’s Jess flaunting her fabulous seven-month bump in a strapless number (but with handy sarong to keep eyes off her no-doubt expanding bottom). She was on the sand with daughter Honor, three.

Jessica says: ‘I can't ever get down to the weight I was before I had Honor/ My body's just different. The jeans just sort of zip up differently, and things hang differently. It's a miracle what happens, but you definitely are different afterward.’

- Selma Blair
Sporting a cowboy hat and colourful bikini, pregnant Selma headed to the coast for a bit of sunshine. The Hollywood actress looked stunning as she pottered along the beach with boyfriend, Jason Bleick.

- Danielle Lloyd (again)
Re-offender Danielle showed off her curves long before that nude photoshoot. Here she is flashing the flesh on a beach in Portugal. The mum-to-be tweeted while she was on her hols saying she was having a lovely time, but felt like a whale! Well, she certainly looks good on it…

- Tori Spelling
Now a mum of four, Tori Spelling hit the beach baring bump number three in this simple black bikini, and of course, enormous shades across the pond in Malibu.

Tori says: ‘I have actually been much sicker this pregnancy than the other two. I have been nauseous for three months straight. It's starting to get better now, thank goodness. And, I'm showing way more too.'

- Gisele
Supermodel Gisele hit the beach eight months into her second pregnancy at the end of 2012. She was hanging out in an animal print bikini in Miami without a swollen ankle, sweaty brow or under-eye bag in sight.

- Danielle Lloyd
Now a mum for the second time, Danielle bared all just days before giving birth in this naked photoshoot for Closer magazine, wearing just earrings and a sparkler on her finger.

Danielle says: ‘I couldn't wait to recreate Demi Moore's naked pregnancy pose. It makes me feel so sexy! I don't think your baby bump should be hidden under baggy clothes – it's beautiful and I'm proud of it!’

- Jenny Frost
Jenny posed for Closer magazine as she neared her due date with non-identical twin girls. Ex-Atomic Kitten star Jen showed off her bumper belly, and told the magazine she was enjoying her new shape, saying: "Being pregnant is a time when some women can feel insecure, but Vinnie has kept me feeling great about myself. I've got a nice big belly, but I've not put on too much weight elsewhere apart from my bum, which I quite like."

- Nell McAndrew
TV personality Nell posed nude for Now magazine when she was seven months pregnant. She said she couldn't understand people who were against pregnant women showing off their bodies, telling the mag: "Unfortunately there are still some really old-fashioned views about pregnancy out there. But although I was pretty nervous stripping off, I soon felt empowered - pregnant bodies are amazing and I'm incredibly proud of these pictures."

- Beyonce
Beyonce was snapped in a gorgeous white bikini five months into her pregnancy with Blue Ivy. She enjoyed a holiday aboard a luxury yacht with husband Jay-Z.

- Imogen Thomas
When glamour girl Imogen announced she was pregnant, we knew it wouldn't be long before she stripped off for a Demi-style shoot. And look! We were right! Here she is eight months pregnant with her first baby.

- Shakira
Singer Shakira stripped off at eight months pregnant to raise funds for UNICEF. She also hosted an online baby shower to raise money for the charity.
